i will be needing a new vehicle this year but want something with space, and a truck bed so that i can still haul stuff around and be able to put my surf board in. but i cant see gas getting any cheaper so i was wondering what i could do to reduce my usage- hydrogen truck is good too just anything that uses an alternative energy source

The short answer is that you’d have to find a way to use the rotation of the windmill to drive the rotation of a magnet. You could attach the magnet directly to the rotor of the windmill. Or you could use a drive belt which would attach to the windmill rotor on one end and another rotor at the other end to which your magnet would be attached. Then you’d surround your rotating magnet with a winding of conductive wire. Voila, there’s your electric generator.
The principle behind eletric generators is that a changing magnetic field will induce an electric current in a conductor exposed to the magnetic field. This is really very old technology. The new part is finding different ways to get the energy to drive the rotor that moves the magnet (or alternatively, moves the coil; it doesn’t really matter which one is moving). Traditional methods use the burning of some kind of fuel or the decay of radioactive materials to heat water to create steam to drive a turbine which…..turns the coils. Or for hydro-electic power, you use the force of falling water to turn a rotor which…..moves the coils.
A windmill is just a way to use the energy of wind to turn the coils.

Hi! I am being killed by my power bills and I need to find alternatives. I live in northern Maryland, so solar might not be an option for me, or so I have been told (too cloudy). So, in looking for other options, wind power looks like an option. I live on top of a hill and get a crazy amount of wind year round. Is there any kind of a low profile wind driven device I could look into? I live in a neighborhood, so I am sure my neighbors would object to a massive windmill. I have seen something that looks like an upside down bucket with slats cut in it. Don’t know what it is called… Any thoughts?

Hypothetically speaking, if i was a multi-billionaire, i would undoubtedly spend a huge chunk of my fortune on my fetish for astronomy. It would be a great opportunity to own your own personal hubble-like space telescope, or maybe your own personal Mars rover that you can drive around on the surface of Mars as a hobby. I believe owning something like that for yourself would be great because you’re getting first hand data, pictures, ect., straight from the source, so it’s not put through any censorship or air brushing. If you had billions of dollars what is one astronomy related splurge you would make?
The possibilities are endless, but personally i would love to have my own personal Mars rover to drive around on the surface of Mars. What would you want? Make it something realistic, don’t say you’re going to send a ship to the nearest star besides the sun which is over 4 light years away, because we don’t have the technology to travel at the speed of light or teleport there. So make it something you would do within our own solar system or some type of telescope you would build to be able to observe the universe right before your eyes for yourself. Personally, i would build and launch my own Mars rover to Mars, that’s what i would want to do.
