I don’t have a problem with paying for good information. I just don’t want to throw money away since the whole idea behind doing it myself is to save some money.
Put a Radiant Barrier in your home. That will save you real money on your A/C bills and it is real money. Go to http://www.Radiosity3000.com and look for a contractor in your area.
I’m trying to find a guide to help me build my own solar panels but all I’m finding are scams.?

I hear you there. There are tons of movies on youtube on how to make your own panels, windmills, etc. Most of them are promo’s for stuff being sold. Most of those guides are garbage, but some look decent. Here’s a review site that looks on the level.

If your main goal is to save money, making your own solar electric panel is not going to do it. You’re right, in that the internet is saturated with scams.
It’s not sexy, but the best way to save money on energy is plain old conservation – getting energy efficient lighting and appliances, and insulating your house.
If you live in a place that never freezes, it may be a savings for you to make your own solar water heater.
And solar electric can save money, long term, for some – but I’m talking about the professional installations where you put up maybe $10,000 up front, and get it back over the next 10 years.
